What does Valentine's Day mean to you?

My lovely readers, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner hurraaaaayyyy! I believe by now you are dreaming of the day, and the question that comes into mind is that, “What does the day mean to you?

Actually, Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies. “Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. Young love is a flame; very pretty, often very hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. The love of the older and disciplined heart is as coals, deep-burning, and unquenchable." -Aristotle, Lao Tzu Henry Ward Beecher.

14th February, is a day every single soul under this planet is waiting to see and embrace, because it is a day everybody recount with relish across the world. Items such as candies, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. Interestingly, it is a day every nook and cranny around the globe sees red like the heart of a warring nation and in Africa, red clothes becomes the most expensive wear.

However, despite many opinions people hold on Valentine’s Day, to me I see it to be the most romantic day of the year because this special day, with all its charisma and magnetism brings love in the air, and in every corner of the world beautiful roses sparkle with joy with the vibrancy of love and romance and this makes everybody’s heart including you, eager to shout, “I Love U” to that special one of you!

Actually, I can’t wait to say Happy Valentine day to all my lovely readers and Finnish friends because they’ve all been nice and lovely to me ever since I set my foot on this happiness land of fountain (Finland)!

Honestly, St. Valentine’s Day is the best season for us to show true and genuine love to people who hold dear to our hearts and we can show this simple but important thing by love letters, love poems, relationship guide, and many more. But is that what we see during the day? Many people, especially the youth all over the world have given a different meaning to the day which has prevented others especially Christians from participating fully in this occasion. A lot of youths involve in many immoral act which sometimes becomes very dishearten. Surprisingly, sex becomes the order of the day among the youths all over the world forgetting the deadly disease HIV/AIDS.

My lovely people, let’s be honest to ourselves because Val’s day is not a license for immorality! Why can’t we celebrate this romantic occasion without getting trapped in unhealthy consequences? Be careful of the girl or boy you meet on the street!

Remember whom you are and how you want to see the future! And give a decent meaning to the day. On that note, Kokonsa will like to wish all my favourite readers and my classmates, thus Industrial management students of Savonia University of Applied Sciences, and Savonia UAS Creative Union, Finland respectively, a Happy Valentine’s day! Enjoy yourselves!!!! But remember AIDS IS REAL!

I am very glad to read your post. Keep up the good work.

The out line is very good and the text kept me glued to the screen of my computer, but there is something that was not clear to me. I thought you are going to explain the real meaning of the Valentine's day but I didn't see it. I would have loved to know...

The Valentine’s Day has its history back to the time of ancient Romans and later the Christian Sait Valentinus, but in Finland it came as late as 1980's. That's why (I believe) it has not so big meaning for Finns as e.g. for Americans who got it already 200 years ago. Also in Finland ystävänpäivä is not only reserved for lovers, rather we remember our good friends with postcards and flowers.

To me ystävänpäivä is just about a normal Saturday - sorry Eric!   ;)  Anyhow, Hyvää Ystävänpäivää kaikille blogin lukijoille!

Eric, we Finns love you! You have the wisdom to express thoughts of truth. How refreshing!  You love us Finns, you encourage us and you make us feel special; and we love you!  Obviously we are not talking about romantic love -- we are talking about true love exemplified by Christ.  Love of forgiveness, mercy and peace. True love is not about us.  It is about doing to others as we would like them to do to us.

Our culture has done great job in mixing lust with love. Lust has to do with one's own selfish desires; it's always steeped in self-interest. True love considers others and wants to do what's best for them. Our culture has turned sex into a recreational sport, ending with tragic emotional, health, economic and social statistics (very costly to an individual as well as to society).  Sex is a wonderful gift from God.  It always includes a deep emotional and physical union.  It is not to be used lightly – it is meant to be saved for a committed relationship (marriage).  Upon a boyfriend or girlfriend pressuring his/her partner to premarital sex, a true friend shows love and respect by honoring his/her partner’s no.  Extramarital sex between teenagers talks about immaturity and poor self-esteem.  Sex connects deeply on emotional as well as physical level.  Romantic love is based on feelings, which come and go.  True love is based on commitment.  It is about reaching out and giving of yourself to others, unconditionally. If our romantic love is not rooted in forgiveness, mercy and peace, as spelled out by the Lover of our Souls some 2000 years ago, it will grow dull real fast on the altar of self-centeredness. The huge numbers of divorces and messed-up kids are natural consequences.

Let us wish Hyvää Ystävänpäivää, filled with love of which St. Val reminded us a long time ago, to everyone around us.

Terve James,

Thanks for your comment.I think Aili and Jukka have said it all .I just want to add my voice.Well acording to history "Saint Valentine was a Roman who was killed for his faith on February 14, 269 A.D. He  refused to worship pagan gods, and some stories say he was a priest who would marry young couples in secret who loved each other but who did not have parental permission. In 496, his 'saint day' was established. He is associated with love because he fell in love with the daughter of his jailer, and would pass notes to her. His final note, before he was executed, read 'from your Valentine'." Source-internet-
